Explain how tactics is both and art and a science |
Art: how we creatively form and apply military force in a given situation. Creation, positioning, movement of combat power Science: The technical application of combat power. Mastery of basic warfighting skills like marksmanship, gunnery, navigation, CAS |
Describe the nature of the tactical environment |
Dynamic, ever changing, chaotic, complex, and unpredictable. Chaos also creates opportunity. Two paradigms. Deterministic-combat outcomes are predictable based on force ratios. Probabilistic-battle is a complex phenomenon with participants interacting with each other and environment. Unpredictable. |
Define decisive in relation to tactics |
To be decisive a battle or engagement must lead to a result beyond itself. Must lead to larger success directly in the war or camapign |
Describe the relationship between decisiveness and military judgement |
Military judgement: A developed skill that is Hines by wisdom gained through experience combined with situational awareness. Allows us to identify emerging patterns, discern CVS, and concentrate combat power. Military judgement allows you understand the situation to achieve a decision |
Describe the importance of understanding the situation to military judgement |
Step one is to understand the situation through METT-T and Red cell. Based on this understanding you can answer the question in this situation what efforts will be decisive. Allows you to think through “if then” scenarios for how the situation can change |
Describe how pattern recognition contributes to faster decision making |
Pattern recognition: The ability to understand the true dynamics of a situation with limited information. Intuitive decision making is needed to generate tempo. Leaders with strong SA and experience can act boldly b/c they know what needs to be and can be done. Coup d’oeil. |
Relate the identification of enemy CVs to achieving a decision |
Identifying enemy CVs allows you to rapidly take advantage of opportunities. Focusing combat power to strike CVs and achieve a decision. |
Explain how shaping the operating are sets conditions for decisive actions |
Shaping actions force the enemy to adopt courses of action favorable to us. By the time you are ready for decisive action we have several COAs. Retain the initiative, preserve momentum, and control tempo |
Explain the relationship of the Main Effort and the enemy CV to achieving a decision |
The main effort is weighted and the focal point for combat power. It is the unit whose actions answer the question how do we achieve a decision |
Describe the role of supporting efforts in relation to the main effort. |
Support relationships must be clearly defined for units as a harmonizing force for subordinate initiative. Commander should ask themselves how can I best support the main effort when faced with a decision. Main effort can shift due to the situation. And corresponding support and combat power must shift as well. |
Explain the importance of boldness and ruthlessness in achieving a decision |
Bloodlessness: daring and aggressive behavior. Desire to win big. Ruthlessness: single minded pursuit of an established goal. Drive to exploit ever possible advantage until victory. You can take both too far to recklessness and cruelty. |
