Survival Of The Fittest

The survival of organisms that gains an advantage due to variation that gives a competitive edge, increasing chance of survival.

In a population with a range of features, those that are best fitted to the environment will survive.

Variation

Differences in DNA, randomly occuring, and inherited from parents.

Most favourable differences are kept and least are lost.

Biogeography

The variation of organisms in relation to geographical regions.

Organisms in very different parts of the world evolved similar structures.

Convergent Evolution

When unrelated organisms aquire similar structures.

Often due to similar environments or climate.

The Fossil Record

•Organisms have become increasingly complex over time.

•Extinction, that there are organisms that existed that no longer do.

•Shows gradual change in species.

•Horses have changed over time, adapting to changed environment.

Transitional Forms

Fossils that show the transition between two species.

Archaepteryx shows wings w/ feathers and features of reptiles. Supports theory that birds are descended from dinosaurs.

Comparative Anatomy

Structures of mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles are similar but used for different functions

Homologous structures.

Homologous Structures

Similar structures in different species due to common ancestory.

Molecular Biology

Evolutionary relationships can be reflected in DNA and proteins. The closer the DNA match the more recent the common ancestor.
