Batista
He was the Cuban leader who did whatever the Americans asked. As Cuba was so close to America, they tried to stay allies and this helped with Batista being a capitalist leader. He was the Cuban President who held a great relationship with America but wasn't very good to his people as he was a horrible dictator.
Fidel Castro
He was the man who led the Cubans in a revolution to become an independent and to overthrow the cruel Batista. The Americans feared him as the they believed he was a communist and would team up with Russia and this did happen. People throughout Russia loved him for escaping the clutches of America and let the Russians set up a nuclear weapons in Cuba to hit the USA with.
Bat of Pigs invasion
This was when the USA trained 1,400 Cuban exiles to recapture Cuba in April 1961 and to kill Fidel Castro. This was a complete failure by Kennedy but now Castro was scared that the Americans would come back stronger and attack again.
U2 photos
The U2 spy plane searched Cuba to see if the rumour about the Cubans setting up Soviet missiles where true but they feared that if it was true that Russia were going to strike first. They found missile site which soon led to a naval blockade. The Russians needed their so then they could finally reach America with nuclear missiles.
Naval Blockade
The naval blockade occurred in 1962 which was hundreds of American naval ships from entering Cuba which had nuclear equipment or weapons on board. If the ships didn't turn around, then the Americans would class it as an act of war.
'secret deal' to remove American missiles from Turkey
Also in 1962, this was when the USA and the USSR were holding secret talks to agree to withdraw the American missiles from Turkey secretly and the Russian missiles from Cuba publicly. The Americans didn't want to show the world that they were also being very threatening.
Improved relations
The 'hot-line' was a private call line between the American president and the soviet leader so that they could speak privately and sort their differences politically without violence or threats. The nuclear test ban treaty wasa treaty signed by many Nations to agree that all nuclear testing should be tested underground rather than it going through our atmosphere and maybe killing or diseaing innocent people.
