Enlightenment Period

1750-1800 Philosophers moved towards intellectualism, away from religion and the Church. Art, literature, and architecture all took on the classical aspects of simplicity and emulating ancient models. Music had less models to work from and evolved differently.

Classic/Classical

The key features of a "classic" work of art or music is that they are based on a model or standard. Key aspects are simplicity, symmetry, balance, and objectivity.

Denis Diderot (1713-1784)

Led a group of the thinkers called the philosophes. Worked to compile contemporal knowledge into projects, notably the Encyclopedie.
