Ethnicity

Ethnicity is usually cultural and people can be of multiple ethnicities. Ethnicity is often distinct with its own language, traditions, food, etc.

Race

Race is determined usually biologically and physically and a person is identified with one certain race.

Social Construct

These are things that are invented by people and race and ethnicity are examples of social construct.

How are ethnicities and race counted in the U.S

The U.S counts the ethnicities and race that are present every 10 years by having the U.S. Bureau of the Census count the population including all the factors of population like religion, race, etc.

Regional Scale

This is where certain races are distributed throughout the country. For example, Hispanics are mainly clustered in the Southwest, African Americans are usually clustered in the Southeast, and Asian Americans are usually clustered in the West coast

Forced Migration

This is when someone is forced to move out of their country by other people for example slaves during the slave trade.

Voluntary Migration

This is when someone moves out of their country voluntarily for example people who move out of their country in order to live in a new place for more money

The Great Migration

This occurred during the 1900s and it was when African Americans moved from the rural south to the urban north.

Cause of Racial Segregation

Due to ethic groups having multiple factors that affect their distribution, segregation might occur. Segregation could be in place due to social or cultural norms or because of law.

Court Case Plessy v Ferguson of 1896

This was the supreme court case that stated that segregation was constitutional because it provided equal rights but separated people.

Redlining

This was a policy that gave the banks the right to refuse loans to African-Americans or anyone that lived in neighborhoods that were mostly African-American people. This heavily contributed to the ongoing segregation.

Nationality

Nationality is determined legally and could be changed, this is the opposite of ethnicity because ethnicity CANNOT be changed.

Centripetal Forces

This is something that is used to unify people like a flag or art.

Centrifugal Forces

These are things that are used to divide people such as different languages and physical boundaries

Causes of Ethnicity Conflict

Ethnicities have conflict when there are too many Centifugal Forces compared to Centripetal Forces

Ethnic Conflicts

Some ethnic conflicts that are occurring or have occurred are Diaspora of the Kurds, the separation Ethiopia and Eritrea, and separation of India and Pakistan

Diaspora of the Kurds

This conflict is caused because Kurds do not have a nation-state so many conflicts start in order for them to fight to stay distinct

Ethiopia and Eritrea

These two countries used to be one country, however, they became separated after the civil war which causes conflicts to occur to this day.

India and Pakistan

After India became independent and was no longer under British rule, the country split to form Pakistan and India due to the religious differences they face. India is majority Hindu and Pakistan is majority Muslim

Ethnic Cleansing

This is a process where a powerful ethnic group removes a weaker group in order to make the region more similar

Genocide

This is a mass killing of people in order to remove their group from existence.

Borders

This is a political boundary that shows where a region starts and ends, it is also the cause of some conflicts because it leads people to believe they are not in allegiance to eachother
