Assent
permission granted by a minor or another person who is unable to give consent.
Informed Consent
patient's acceptance (or refusal) of a line of treatment based on the information provided by a healthcare provider; an ethical and legal consideration
Patient's Bill of Rights
rights of a patient guaranteed by a provider, the institution providing services, or the government; duties of the provider that the patient can expect.
Surrogate
legal representative for a patient who is a minor or an incompetent.
Harm Avoidance Model of informed consent
-old school way; leave out risks/benefits when informing. Doctors assumed pt doesn't want to know, wouldn't understand, doctor knows best, etc.
-paternalism accepted by patient
-no autonomy of patient
Autonomy Enhancing Model of informed consent
providers should not ignore wishes of the patient and should not try to strongly influence them. Provider is considered a partner to the patient.
