What is in the matrix of a mitochondrion?
|
High concentrations of the soluble oxidative metabolism enzymes, substrates, nucleotide cofactors, inorganic ions.

Briefly outline the mitochondrial ETC.
|
1- NADH and FADH2 transfer their electrons to other substances, they become reoxidise (NAD+ and FADH). 2- The transferred electrons are involved in sequential redox reactions of redox centres in four enzyme complexes before reducing O2. 3- In the ETC protons are expelled from mitochondrion to produce a proton gradient across the membrane. This free energy of this electrochemical gradient drives ATP synthesis through oxidative phosphorylation. |

What is permeable to the inner membrane?

O2, CO2 and H2O. Transport of other ions and molecules requires transport proteins.

Can NADH pass through the inner-membrane?

No it lacks the transporter for it so it must be transferred via a shuttle system. Only the electrons are transferred Aka. the malate-aspartate shuttle system |
