Thesis

In telling the story of Chris McCandless, Jon Krakauer’s “Into The Wild” teaches us that an American is someone who is free to pursue happiness as they define it, brave enough to forge their own path, and absolutely determined to see it through.

From the time he got out of school....

From the time he got out of school, Chris spent his life pursuing what made him happiest. Following his wanderlust, he lead a life of travel, “tramping” all over the country. "I've decided that I'm going to live this life for some time to come.”, he wrote in a postcard to a former employer,“The freedom and simple beauty of it is just too good to pass up.” Out of all his journeys, however, he was by far the most excited for the trip he was planning to Alaska.

Quote: "Chris MCcCandless intended....

“Chris McCandless intended to invent a new life for himself, one in which he would be free to wallow in unfiltered experience.” I think what is meant by this quote is that Chris intended to live a life void of the distractions of our world. Freedom from the noise and lights and meaningless interaction of everyday life. To bask in the silent calm of nature. One that only nature can provide.

It is clear to see that Chris....

It is clear to see that Chris could be considered romantic as well. Romantics associate nature with independence, moral clarity, and purity. That is precisely the thinking of Chris McCandless as he plotted his venture into the wild. Nature would provide him with a sense of clarity in his life as it's pure, “unfiltered experience” cannot be matched. His persistent persona makes him an American as well, as Chris was rarely deterred from something he set his mind to.

Quote: "There was just no talking the guy....

"There was just no talking the guy out of it," Gallien recalls. "He was determined.” "Once Alex made up his mind about something there was no changing it. I even offered to buy him a plane ticket to Fairbanks, which would have let him work an extra ten days and still get to Alaska by the end of April. But he said, ‘No, I want to hitch north. Flying would be cheating. It would wreck the whole trip.'"

Conclusion

Perhaps this stubbornness is considered foolish by some, yet I admire the strong will of Chris McCandless. He had the guts and the freedom to pursue his dreams, and that is what surely deems him a true American.
