Trust vs Mistrust (up to 1yr)

child develops a sense of trust in others through being nurtured and loved. If a child is not nurtured and loved, s/he will experience a high level of mistrust causing the child to be withdrawn later in life.

Autonomy vs Shame and Doubt


(2-3 yrs)

develop skills that allow him/her to be autonomous- motor skills and verbal skills. becomes mote confident and in control. If the child is not provided with what s/he needs socially, eg nurturance, s/he will feel ashamed and less confident

Initiative vs Guilt (4-5 yrs)

child becomes more curious and moves around into new spaces to explore. The child learns t play with others. the child who is not allowed to take initiative will feel guilty and fearful

Industry vs Inferiority (6-11)

child develops a need to do things well, to work and to provide in the future. School and peers are critical to assisting the child in her/his mastery over tasks. If a child fails to achieve this, h/she will feel inferior and incompetent

Identity vs Role Confusion (12-18 yrs)

adolescent begins to create her/his own identity and to integrate the various components of her/himself into a whole person. An adolescent who is unable to integrate will experience role confusion

Intimacy vs isolation (20-35 yrs)

the individual learns to build reciprocal relationships with others on many levels, including socially, sexually, and occupationally. individuals who fail to build these relationships will feel isolated

Generativity vs Stagnation (35 -50 yrs)

the individual develops the capacity to care and nurture. individuals who fail at this stage will focus only on caring for her/himself

Ego integrity vs despire (50 + yrs)

the individual learns to accept his/her own life achievements and significant others. if an individual fails at this s/he will experience despair.
