INTRO: state aims
Peron
"a politically sovereign, socially just and economically independent nation."
- stay in power as long as possible by restructuring the Argentine government with the help of several economic, social and political policies
- keeping the support of the working class to stay in power
Main argument
Economic, social and political policies mostly successful but repressive character made opposition grow
1st Para: Economic policies
- aimed at achieving economic independence and self-sufficiency
- repatriation of the foreign debt and the transfer of foreign owned companies to the state
- protectionsit measures such as restrictions on Imports
- unregulated trade avoided by increased control over exports and Imports
- increased salaries of the working class
- giving the government extended power over economic planning
critics: "regulations became more and more oppressive"
- success in the short term: living standards increased, increase in imports which helped industrialisation
- long term: difficulties, decrease in agricultural production, rise in salaries pushed prices up - caused by Peron's miscalculations (wartim profits ran out and 3rd ww never happened)
- growing opposition as people realised that Peron was unable to deal with the economic problems
- eonomic aim of establishing economic nationalism completely failed and did not even contribute to his main aim of staying power and opposition increased
2nd Para: Social Policies
- satisfaction of the working class by redressing the existing gaps between rich and poor
- social weapon: Eva, "lady of hope"
- Eva Perron Foundation, "exceeded in size, in influence ad in general signifikante, most of the ministries of the government, contributed to welfare of children and the elderly, healthcare, housing, recreation, Provision, educational facilities
- Eva stated that the FEP was giving the people solely what was rightfully theirs, avoided the damage of people's pride
- improving the status of women
- female branch of the Peronist party established, ensured female participation and support for Perron
90% of the women registered voted in 1951, peron obtained 64% among female voters
- BUT traditional image of women did not change
"They were given political rights, but their real standing in society did not change radically."
- improvement of education, acces to education for studenty of all ages
- more schools built, existing schools Expanded, free transportation, more children enabled to go to school
- success! educational policies achieved to redress the gap by adjusting opportunities
Imitation: criticism including that Peron used education to influence young people's minds, education system taught the ideas of peronism
- success! social policies achieved their aims to redress the gap between rich and poor and were cebtralized to achieve better results
3rd Para: Political Policies
aim stay in power while oppressing opposition, meanwhile he wanted to establish a greater national sense and unity
- Eva also political weapon, encouraged many people to stay loyal to Peronism
- propaganda illustrtaing Peron's successes
- media as means of Propaganda eg newspapers La prensa and La nacion
- censorship of newspapers to control people's minds
- halfof the music played had to be by Argentine composers and the government regulated the film industry
- restricted paper supply plus bpgus inspections
- BUT when Eva died he lost he connection to Argentine people, lost support
- partially successful: people mostly stayed loyal to his regime and he successfully oppressed opposition but this does not mean that opposition was destroyed, it continued to exist under the surface and when EVA died became obvious
