SIMPLE SQUAMOUS EPITHELIUM
Consists of a single layer of tightly packed flattened cells. Nuclei usually broad and thin. Common at sites of diffusion & filtration. It is found in the Lungs, it lines the air sacs in the lungs. Function – Protective barrier, secretion absorption, excretion.
SIMPLE CUBOIDAL EPITHELIUM–
cuboidal = cube shaped) Found in Kidney tubules, thyroid glands, and pancreas and liver. Function is secretion and absorption. Has free surface which is located in the central area of the cell.
SIMPLE COLUMNAR EPITHELIUM---
Columnar shaped consists of a single layer of elongated cells has goblet cells.Example small intestines, uterus & stomach. Function: absorption, secretion, protection. This cell has MICROVILLI which creates more contact space. This allows for more absorption to take place. Most of the digestive system consists of this type of epithelium tissue. Secrets digestive fluids and absorbs nutrients from digested food.
PSEUDOSTRATIFIED COLUMNAR---
Appears to have many layers, but does not. Has goblet cells and cilia. Is found lining the respiratory passages. Function: movement of mucus, absorption & secretion.
STRATIFIED SQUAMOUS EPITHELIUM—
Consists of many layers of cells. Forms the outer layer of skin (epidermis) Lines oral cavity, esophagus, vagina and anal canal.
STRATIFIED CUBODIAL EPITHELIUM ---
(Stratified = Protection) 2 to 3 layers of cubodial cells Location: lines the ducts of mammary glands, sweat glands, salivary glands.
STRATIFIED COLUMNAR EPITHELIUM –
(Stratified = Protection) Contains a superficial layer of columnar cells overlying several layers of cubodial cells. It is found in the male urethra (tube from bladder out) vasdeferen (male reproductive organ) and part of the pharynx
TRANSITIONAL EPITHELIUM (CHANGING)
Changes in response to increase tension; tissue tretches, cells change shape when organ is distended. Location: lining of the urinary bladder, ureters, urethra Prevents the urinary contents from diffusing back into the internal environment.
TYPE OF EXOCRINE GLANDS:
A) MEROCRINE GLAND Secrets substance only; Salivary, sweat, pancreas B) APOCRINE GLAND – Secretes substance & portion of cell; mammary gland C) HOLOCRINE GLAND – Secretes substance and entire cell; oil glands
