What are epithelia?

Cells that cover or line all the body surfaces, tubes and cavities.

Cells that form the interfaces between the different physiological fluid compartments.

Nah mate

What are the characteristics of epithelia

-Cells are in intimate contact with each other and may be connected by tight junctions.

-Epithelial cells are separated from underlying tissues by the basement membrane (BM).

-Cells undergo rapid division to replace those continually lost from the surface.

3 points for this one:

-Contact and connections

-BM

-Division

Simple columnar epithelium: 3 Levels of folding

-Large folds visible to the naked eye

-Microscopic Villi covered by a simple columnar epithelium

-Microvilli modifications of the apical surface ofnthe epithelial cells, visible only at the electron microscope level

Think size of the folds

Simple columnar epithelium - surface modification

-Apical surface of each cell is covered by several hundered microvilli forming the brush border, mucus adheres to it

-Goblet cells with intensely staining mucus released to lubricate gut contents

-Basement membrane (BM) separates the epithelial cells from the underlying tissue

There are 3

Stratified Squamous Epithelium - The Oesophagus

-Flattened cells that are worn off and shed from the surface desquamation

-Basal cells on the BM divide, move upwards to the surface

-Protects underlying tissue from abrasion

3 Points

What is Apical Absorption

Movement of molecules through the cell bodies

What is Apical Secretion

Movement of molecules through the cell body

What is paracellular movement

Movement of molecules through the tight junctions between the cells

What are the major tight junction proteins

Claudins and occludins

What are the roles of tight junctions

-Barriers- separate one compartment from another

-Fences- maintain the asymmetric distribution of lipids and proteins in the apical amd basal membranes

-Gates- allow some molecules to flow more easily than others

3 roles

What are the names of the domains formed by tight junctions

Apical and basal membrane domains

Which types of epithelia allow rapid diffusion?

Squamous

Which type of epithelium has a secretory function?

Pseudostratified cilliated columnar epithelium

That awkward long ass one
