What are the phases of Tonic/Clonic epilepsy? Explain them.
Prodrome - Feeling a bit off - sense of seizure coming
Aura - 'Closing in', darkness, etc
Ictus - a) Tonic - rigid, maybe blue, maybe salivate,
b)Clonic - shaking, jerking, etc
Post-Ictal - Bit unresponsive, limp, slowly come out of it
What is an Absence (Petit Mal)
Where individual has no shaking, jerking, but goes limp, vacant, lack of activity and responses
How long would an Absence last typically?
2-10 secs
What are two types of Partial Seizures?
- Simple Partial Seizures
- Complex Partial Seizures
What is a Partial Seizure?
Focused or localised within a particular area within the brain
What are some aspects of a Simple Partial Seizure?
- Is common in the Motor Strip
- Part of a limb may be affected, and can progress to rest of the body (Grand Mal)
- Can be also speech and visual seizures (e.g. sounds, see flashes, hear ringing)
What are some aspects of a Complex Partial Seizure?
- There are elaborate symptoms
- Cognitive and affective symptoms
- Sensory - visual and auditory distortions (see images, smell things)
- psychic - impending doom, etc
- Somatomotor - lip smacking, picking, etc
- Not as understood by general population
What is Status Epilepticus
When a persons seizures progress into a continuous period of seizures. It can cause breathing problems.
What possible causes of Status Epilepticus?
- Sudden cessation of meds
