Convey
To make something known to someone.
(EX: What does the author convey(make known) in the passage/story).
Infer
To form an opinion based on facts/clues/evidence.
(EX: Based on what you have read in the story/passage, what can you infer about John and Grace's relationship).
Impact
"The Result"- Often describes when readers are powerfully affected by something in a story.
(EX: What is the impact of the word "EXEPTIONAL" in the passage?)
Connote
(A synonym of "implies")- Meaning behind a word.
(EX: The word "childlike" connotes innocence).
Personification
1. Can mean giving a non-living thing human characteristics.
(EX: The wind roared)
2. A person used as an example to show a certian quality.
(EX: Uncle Sam PERSONIFIES patriotism).
Extended Metaphor
When a comparison of 2 things last for several senatances, a paragraph, or even throughout an entire story/passage.
(EX: What point is the author trying to make, with his extended metaphor that compares life to a spiderweb?)
Emphasize
To give special importnace or attention to something.
(EX: What does the author emphazise about Mike's friendship with Bill in paragraph 6?)
Determine
To decide something or come to a conclusion about it.
(EX: What can you determine about the Navajo tribe based on the passage?)
Dramatic
Large, Sudden, or Extreme.
(EX: What dramatic change does the protagonist go through in the story?)
Pioneer
First/Changes easily.
(EX: The pioneer thought came from scientist at Harvard).
Insufficient
Not enough or Inadequate.
(EX: The author gives insufficient data to back up his/her thesis statement).
Claim
A stated opinion.
Accuracy
Freedom from mistake or error.
