Convey
To make something known to someone.
Ex: What does the author convey (make known) in the passage/story?
Infer
To form an opinion based on facts/ clues/ evidence.
Ex: Based on what you have read in the story/ passage, what can you infer about John and Grace's relationship?
Impact
"The result"- often describes when readers are powerfully affected by something in a story.
Ex: What is the impact of the word "EXCEPTIONAL" in the passage?
Connote
Meaning behind a word.
Ex: The word "childlike" connotes innocence.
Personification
Can mean giving a non- living thing human characteristics.
Ex: The wind roared.

OR

Person used as an example to show a certain quality.
Ex: Uncle Same personifies patriotism.
Extended Metaphor
When a comparison of 2 things lasts for several sentences, a paragraph, or even throughout an entire story/passage.
Ex: What point is the author trying to make, with his extended metaphor that compares life to a spider web?
Emphasize
To give special importance or attention to something.
Ex: What does the author emphasize about Mike's friendship with Bill in paragraph 6?

To decide something or come to a conclusion about it.

Large, sudden, or extreme.
Ex: What dramatic change does the protagonist go through in the story?

Ex: The pioneer thought came from scientists at Harvard.
Insufficient
Not enough or inadequate.
Ex: The author gives insufficient data to back up his/her thesis statement.

A stated opinion.
