What is the definition of enzymes?
Proteins that catalyze chemical reactions
True or false. All species tend to have the same distribution of enzymes.
False, different animal species may have different distribution of enzymes
What are isozymes?
Proteins that have different polypeptide structures but catalyze the same chemical reaction
What are 3 causes of increased serum enzyme activity?
1) Release from injured cells
2) Increased production
-Induction of a membrane-bound enzyme
-Hyperplasia or neoplasia of cell of origin
3) Decreased removal
e.g. renal failure and enzymes normally cleared through kidney
What are the 6 factors affecting the degree of increased enzyme activity?
1) Concentration in cell
2) Intracellular distribution
3) Severity of cell damage
4) Number of cells damaged
5) Plasma half life of enzyme
6) Does the enzyme get into the plasma?
What is the significance of decreased enzyme activity?
Usually no diagnostic importance
e.g. Alkaline phosphatase can be low sometimes and its NOT significant
How are enzymes usually measured? Reported?
Measured by activity (NOT concentration)
Reported as U/L or mU/L
-1 U=1 umol/min
