What is entropy: |
A measure of the dispersal energy within the chemicals making up a chemical system. It has units JK-1mol-1 |
|
How can entropy change be predicted? |
Changes of state to gas or from solid to liquid are linked to an increase in entropy. |
|
What is standard entropy? |
The entropy of one mole of substance under standard conditions. |
|
When is a reaction feasible? |
When reactants have a higher overall energy than products. (ΔG<0)- a negative free energy change. |
|
Free energy change equation |
ΔG=ΔH-TΔS Where ΔG is the free energy change. ΔH is the enthalpy change. T is the temperature in K. ΔS is the entropy change. |
|
Shortcomings of ΔG: |
It doesn't take activation energy or rate of reaction into account. A reaction may be feasible, but will only take place slowly e.g. rust, or with a large input of energy e.g. burning magnesium ribbon. |
