Japanese poem about nature. Follow 5 7 5 format

Limerick

Numerous 5 line poem that follows a definite rhyme pattern ( AABBA )

Refrain

The repetition of lines in a poem to stress the theme of the poem

Tone

The " feeling " that the poem conveys to the reader. EX. Sadness,happiness,anger.

Stanza

The grouping of lines in a poem. Think of them as paragraphs

The repetition of sounds at the end of words

Rhythm

The pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry

Rhyme scheme

The arrangement of lines in a poem or stanza. It is expressed by using letters ( AA BB CC )

A comparison of two things without using like or as

A comparison of two things using like or as

Personification

Giving human characteristics to non-human things. EX. The light danced across the sky.

Allusion

A reference to well-known person, work of art mythological character or place, historical event or person, or a biblical reference

Figurative language

Descriptive language used in poetry. It is used to achieve a desired effect that may not be possible using everyday language.

Alliteration

The repetition of the beginning sounds of words ( Tall Tree, Bad Boy )

Irony

The intended meaning is the opposite of what is expressed

Onomatopoeia

The word imitates the sound it represents ( pop, bang, zoom )

Hyperbole

Exaggeration on purpose. EX. I'm so hungry I could eat a horse.

Symbol

Something you can see and touch that stands for something you can't.

Imagery

Words or phrases that describe something in a way that creates pictures or images that appeal to the readers senses

Prose

Any literature that is not poetry
