define figures of speech

- any departure from the plain ordinary expression of fact or emotion for the purpose of making the meaning more effect
- ex. instead of saying shannon was a fast runner, we could say, "shannon ran like the wind."
define simile
- most common figure of speech
- comparison usually containing the words "like" or "as".
- true simile reveals a new or unexpected resemblance between two objects which are unlike
- ex. my love is like a red, red, rose
define metaphor
- a comparison
- states that one object is something else
- "as" or "like" is not used
- ex. his eyes are shining stars
- ex. the moon was a ghostly galleon
define personification
- the figure of speech by which we speak of animals, things or ideas as if they were people
- ex. "slowly, silently now the moon walks the night in her silvery shoon"
ex. "death crept quietly into the room"
define imagery
- a reference to any sensory experience
- any naming or description of an object, event or quality that can be seen, felt, heard, smelled, or tasted
define symbolism
- use of an object or action (the symbol) to stand for something else
- usually something of far greater importance than the symbol itself

- the repetition of the same consonant sound closely following each other
