THEME
The general idea about life that is revealed in the text.
UNIVERSAL THEMES
Themes that can be found in stories in any culture, place or period.
LITERARY THEMES
A statement that a piece of writing makes about a subject.
SUBJECT
The subject is the topic of the text; what the text is about
GENERALIZATION
a statement that applies to many people or situations. They do not have to be true all of the time, but they are normally true.

ANALOGY
compares the relationship between two pairs of words.
CONFLICT
struggle between two forces in a story.
EXTERNAL CONFLICT

the start of the story, the situation before the action starts
COMPLICATION/RISING ACTION
the series of conflicts and crisis in the story that lead to the climax
CLIMAX
the turning point, the most intense moment—either mentally or in action
RESOLUTION
the conclusion, the tying together of all of the threads
