Antagonist
The character who stands in direct opposition to or in conflict with the central character
Cacophony
Harsh, clashing, or dissonant sounds, often produced by a combination of words that require a clipped, explosive delivery
Character Foil
A character who, by contrast, points up the qualities or characteristics of another character.
Connotation
The associations, images, or impressions carried by a word ex. mother suggests warmth, love, secutiry
Couplet
two consecutive lines of poetry that rhyme and that are written in the same meter, or pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables.
Denotation
the percise, literal meaning of a word, without emotional associations or overtones
Free Verse
Poetry that does not follow a regular metrical pattern or rhyme scheme.
Onomatopoeia
The use of words whose sound imitates the sound of the thing being names ex. hum, buzz, clang boom
