Clause

A grammatical unit that is centered around a verb phrase, usually with an accompanying subject.

Main clause

A clause that can function alone as an independent, complete sentence that makes sense on its own.

Dependent clause

A clause that cannot function alone as a complete sentence, but which is dependent on other elements.

Sentence

A unit with a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop, exclamation or question mark at the end.

Simple sentence

Has only one main clause consisting of a verbal and generally a subject, and may also contain other optional elements such as a direct object or adverbials.

Compound sentence

Consists of at least two main clauses connected by a coordinating conjunction, each of which contains a verbal, and which may or may not have the same subject.

Complex sentence

Has one main clause and a dependent clause, which may be closely integrated into the main clause or a phrase.
