I am Hermes one of the twelve Olympian Gods. In Rome, they call me Mercury. Even as a baby, I was cunning and very smart .
On the day I was born, I snuck away from my parents and went to steal cattle from my brother Apollo. My mother Maia didn’t believe I could do this because I was just a baby, but my father Zeus knew it was me.
On the day I was born I also made a lyre out of a tortoise shell. When Apollo finally found me he was angry, but then I played him music on my lyre. I convinced Apollo to take my lyre in exchange for the cows.
Two of my powers are being the God of Thieves and the God of Merchants, because I am cunning and can convince people to trade with me.
Since I am the fastest of the Gods, Zeus made me the Messenger to the Gods. Wings on my sandals and hat help me carry messages quickly between the Gods and heroes.
The herald’s staff Zeus gave me is another symbol that I carry with me wherever I go. I use my staff when I am escorting travelers or leading the souls of the dead to the Underworld.
Other than Hades I am the only one that can freely travel back and forth to the Underworld! Sometimes the messages I carry are dreams, including messages from the dead to the living.
Since I am always traveling I never settled down to marry, but I have numerous children, including Pan.
Pan’s mother ran off screaming when she saw that he was half-man and half-goat. So, I took Pan to Mount Olympus where he entertains the Gods and makes them laugh.
As you can see I have many powers and I am a very busy God.
