Culture

A cumulation of traditions, ideals, beliefs, languages, values, religions, arts, governance



Example: American culture has many aspects of culture. It is a mix of cultures.

Norms

What society expects one's behavior to be like.



Example: It is a norm in this culture to ask, "How are you doing?" as a greeting.

Values

How people live and their standards of living.



Example: Hoarding is frowned upon because as a society we often value cleanliness.

Beliefs

An attitude about whether something is factual or not.



Example: some people believe in ghosts.

M time

Monochronic time has to do with an emphasis on time.



Example: Being productive at work.

P time

Time is flexible.



Example: There are people who value leisure time.

High context

Words have less meaning than context which makes conversations longer.



Example: in a high context conversation when a person asks how you are you will probably discuss how you are at length.

Low context

Words have more meaning than context.



Example: in this kind of conversation people are direct and to the point with as few words as possible.

Individualism

Independent and autonomous; the individual is emphasized, not the group and of individual solves problems more than the group



Example: American society is individualistic.

Collectivism

Interdependent; identity is gathered by a group. Belonging; problems are solved by the group.



Example: small bands or tribes of people would be collectivist.

Language

Sounds or symbols that influence thoughts and feelings and is an entry point into culture.



Example: Lushootseed is an endangered Puget Salish language that is being revitalized.

Symbols

Represents a basic idea, thing, or relationship.



Example: a petroglyph can symbolize different aspects of life or of one cultures mythology

Artifacts

The parts of culture that we can see or interact with.



Example: Art, music, literature
