What is the rule for question marks?
put a question mark after a direct question but not after an indirect one.
ie.. Do you know if the test is open book? (direct question) vs. I wonder if the test is open book. (indirect question)
How do you use question marks with quotations?
put the question mark OUTSIDE the quotation marks if the sentence is a question, but INSIDE if the quotation or title is a question. ie.. Did you actually say, "I quit"? (sentence is a question) vs. I asked my boss, "Do you want me to quit?" (quotation is a question.)
What is the rule for using exclamation points?
Put an exclamation point after an expression to emphasize it or to show loud sounds or strong emotions, (surprise or yelling). The same rule about using quotations marks with questions marks applies to using them with exclamation points.
The exclamation point is used mostly:
in dialogue and informal correspondence.
When is a semicolon used?

Subject verb; subject verb (I ate; she slept)
Subject verb; however, subject verb (I ate; however, she slept.)
As a supercomma.
When are colons used?
after a complete statement that introduces one of the following elements: a name, a list, a quotation, or an explanation.
When are dashes used?
to isolate inserted information, to signal an abrupt change of thought, or to emphasize what follows. Dashes are always optional.
What can dashes be used to replace?
commas, semicolons and colons.
What is a run-on sentence?
When two independent clauses are written together without proper punctuation between them.
What are the rules for capital letters?
1) Capitalize the first word of every sentence.
2) Capitalize the first word of a sentence-length quotation.
3) Capitalize the first, last, and main words in a title. Don't capitalize prepositions, fanboys, or articles.
4) Capitalize specific names of people, places, languages, and nationalities.
5) Capitalize names of months, days of the week, and special days, but not the seasons.
6) Capitalize a title of relationship if it takes the place of the person's name. If my (or your, her, his, etc.) is in front of the word, a capital is not used.
7) Capitalize names of particular people or things, but not general terms.
