Rhyme
Identity in sound of some part, esp. the end, of words or lines of verse.
Assonance
The repetition of vowel sounds in a sequence of words with different endings.
Diction
An author's choice of words.
Alliteration
The repetition of initial consonant sounds through a sequence of words.
Syntax
The way words are put together to form phrases, clauses, and sentences.
Figurative Language
Heightens meaning by implicitly or explicitly representing something in terms of some other thing, the assumption being that the "other thing" will be more familiar to the reader.
Simile
A direct, explicit comparison of one thing to another, usually using the words 'like' or 'as' to draw the connection.
Metaphor
An implicit comparison or identification of one thing with another unlike itself.
Symbol
A person, place, thing, event, or pattern in a literary work that designates itself and at the same time figuratively represents something else.
Meter
The more or less regular pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry.
Rhyme Scheme
The pattern of end rhymes in a poem, often noted by small letters. (e.g., abab or abba)
Stanza
A section of a poem demarcated by extra line spacing.
Onomatopoeia
A word capturing or approximating the sound of what it describes. (e.g., buzz)
iamb
A metrical foot consisting of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed one.
trochee
A metrical foot consisting of a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed one.
