Backgorund

.Woodcutting causes a source of employment but 50 million tonnes of wood is chopped down each year.

Energy acess

.Less than 12% have access to formal electricity.


.The majority of that is found in the capital Bamko.


.In rural areas less than 1% have access to formal electricity.


. This effects health care, education & hinders income generating activity.

Other possibilities

.In 1990 a new national domestic Energy strategy was formulated.


.It focused on renewable energy

Solar

. 5-6 hrs of day light a day.


.Solar panels were installed on top of 30 schools by the Mali Folke Centre.


.Locals were then instructed on how to maintain them.

Biofuels

.The MFC has also developed plantations of Jatropha.


.A plant that can be turned into biofuels and stops desertification.

African Rural Energy Enterprise

.The AEED has been established to encourage energy efficient technology and cutting down on low quality bio fuels.


.It is a United Nations programme.


.One project has been the production of fuel briquettes made from agricultural by-products.


.They are 25% cheaper and burn for longer

Sustainable living

.July 2004, a law was passed protecting certain forest species from excessive cutting.


.The government has also suspended the exporting of wood.
