types of endocrine glands
Exocrine - secretes into a duct
Endocrine - excretes into blood stream
Negative feedback system
regulates endocrine system by increasing or decreasing secretion of a hormone.
Thyroid - major function
The production, storage and release of thyroid hormones.
Thyroid hormones -

purpose of T3 and T4
regulate body metabolism
regulate energy production
regulate f/e production
controls tissue use of fats, proteins and carbs
thyroid hormone -
purpose of calcitonin
inhibit mobilization of Ca+ from bone
Thyroid hormones are regulated by
anterior pituitary gland
Parathyroid glands - where and what
located behind lobes of thyroid. Produce parathormone (PTH)
PTH
secreted by parathyroid, regulated by feedback system, regulates serum calcium levels
*acts on bone
*acts on kidneys
*acts on GI
Hyperthyroidism
sustained increase in release of T3/T4 or both
Graves Disease
most common form of hyperthyroidism
-autoimmune disease
-may be cause by precipitating factors
-antibodies bind to gland causing overgrowth and overproduction
S/S of hyperthyroidism
heat intolerance, fine straight hair, bulging eyes, flushed face, enlarged thyroid, tachycardia, increased b/p, weight loss, muscle wasting, localized edema, tremors, clubbing, diarrhea, menstral changes
toxic nodular goiters -
caused by thyroid hormone excreting nodules independent of TSH. If assoc. with hyperthyroidism are called toxic
diagnosis of hyperthyroidism
decreased TSH
high Free T4 levels
radioactive iodine uptake RAIU
-more uptake with Graves then with nodules
hyperthyroidism treatment
Drugs- PTU, blocks conversion of T3 & T4
Iodine - SSKI and Lugols sol. decrease blood flow
b-andrenergic blockers - inderal, decreases tachycardia, diaphoresis and palpitations
nonpharm tx of hyperthyroidism
-radioactive iodine therapy to fry thyroid
-surgery
