define endocrine system?

communication system using hormones as signalling molecules

define hormones

molecules released by endocrine directly into the blood. They act as messengers carrying a signal from endocrine glands to target cells or organs

target cells

cells with a specific receptor on their plasma membrane, that is complementary to the shape of a hormone.

2 types of hormones

steroid (e.g. oestrogen and testosterone)

protein (e.g. adrenaline and insulin)

protein hormones

not soluble in phospholipid bi-layer, so they cant enter the cell.

bind to plasma membrane to trigger release of second messenger molecule inside the cell.

steroid hormones

can pass through the plasma membrane and enter the cell.

can also enter nucleus to have a direct effect on the cell DNA

Endocrine glands

ductless glands made of groups of cells that make and release hormones directly into the blood via capillaries
