Group of interbreeding individuals; group within which one is most likely to find a mate and is marked by a degree of genetic relatedness and shares a common gene pool.
Population
The total complement of genes shared by reproductive members of a population.
Gene pool
Populations that are clearly isolated geographically and/or socially from other breeding groups.
Breeding isolates
Mating with individuals from the same group.
Endogamy
Mating pattern whereby individuals obtain mates from groups other than their own.
Exogamy
The mathematical relationship expressing- under ideal conditions- the predicted distribution of alleles in populations; the central theorem of population genetics; postulates a set of conditions in a population where no evoluation occurs.
Hardy-Weinberg theory of genetic equilbrium
List the hypothetical conditions that a population would be assumed to meet.
1. The population is infinitely large.
2. There is no mutation.
3. There is no gene flow.
4. Natural selection is not operating.
5. Mating is random.
Patterns of mating in a population in which individuals choose mates preferentially.
Nonrandom mating
A type of nonrandom mating in which relatives mate more often than predicted under random mating conditions.
Inbreeding
In biology, pertaining to populations of a species that differ from other populations of the same species with regard to some aspects of outwardly expressed phenotype. Such phenotypic variation within a species is usually associated with differences in geographical location.
Racial
A genetic trait governed by a locus with more than one allele; used as a principal tool to understand the dynamics of evoluation in modern populations.
Polymorphism
