What does START stand for?
"Simple triage and rapid treatment"
What are the three physiological parameters that are assessed according to START triage?
RPM:

Respiration

Pulse

Mental status
How long should START triage take per patient?
30 seconds
What is step one of START triage?
Ask all patients that can get up and walk to get up and go to a collection point such as an ambulance or building. Those who can do that are GREEN tagged (Priority 3) AKA "walking wounded."
What are the only three treatments provided during START triage?
1) Opening airways and inserting OPAs

2) Applying pressure to bleeding

3) Elevating extremities
What is STEP TWO of START triage?
Assessing RPM
What priority is a patient that's not breathing, even after an OPA is inserted?
Priority 0 (black tag)
If a patient starts off apneic, but begins breathing after an OPA is inserted, what priority is the patient?
Priority 1 (red tag)
If the patient is breathing, what do you do next?
Check respiration rate. If rate is above 30, tag the patient red (priority 1). If the patient is breathing but has no pulse, tag the patient red (priority 1). If the patient is breathing, has good skin signs, a pulse, and capillary refill less than 2 seconds, move to next step.
A patient is breathing, has good skin signs, good capillary refill, and pulse. What is checked next?
Mental status. If alert, patient is priority 2 (yellow tag). If there is altered mental status, patient is priority 1 (red tag).
After all patients except for the walking wounded have been tagged, what do you do?
Re-triage walking wounded. Use the exact same assessment, going over RPM (respiration, pulse, and mental status).
What are the characteristics of a priority 1 (red tag) patient?
Altered mental status, or...

Absent radial pulse, or...

Respirations greater than 30/minute
What are the characteristics of a priority 2 (yellow tag) patient?
Patient is alert,

patient has radial pulse,

patient has respirations less than 30/minute
What are the characteristics of a priority 0 (black tag) patient?
No breathing after OPA or

No pulse AND no breathing
