Glucose

Indications -patient altered mental status with aknown history of diabetes mellitus

Activated charcoal

Indications- poisoning by mouth


Medical direction or standing protocols authorized Administration



Contradiction- altered mental status, ingestion of acids or alkalis , unable to swallow



Actions- absorbs binds, certain poisons and prevents them from being absorbed in the body



Side effects- black stools some patients typically those who have ingested poisons that cause nausea vomit if the patient vomits repeat the dose once



Dosage- adult and children Grand activated per kilogram of body weight usual adult dose 25 - 50 kilograms usual pediatric dose 12 1/2 kilograms to 25 kilograms

Oxygen

Indication- hypoxia medical direction or standing protocols authorize the Administration



Contradiction- none when used in the prehospital setting



Actions- increases the oxygen concentration in the alveoli which subsequently will increase the oxygen saturation available for hemoglobin



Side effects- prolong Administration of high flow non-humidified oxygen may result in drying of the mucous membrane and salting an irritation and possibly nosebleeds



Dosage- 15 liters per minute by non-rebreather 1 - 6 liters per minute buy nasal cannula


Aspirin

Indication all of the following must be met- patient complains of chest pain, medical direction or standing protocols authorizes the administration



Contradictions- unable to swallow patient has a history of asthma patient has known bleeding disorder GI ulcer or history of recent bleeding



Medical control Nature's benefit outweighs risk for the following- patient is taking medication to prevent clotting example Coumadin, pregnancy ,recent surgery



Actions- prevents blood from clotting as quickly leading to increased travel after MI



Side effects- nausea vomiting bleeding heartburn if patient is allergic can cause bronchospasm and wheezing



Dosage- 162 - 324 milligrams to and swallow orally

Narcan

Indications- suspected narcotic overdose, coma of unknown cause, medical direction or standing programs authorizes the administration



Contradictions- patient is breathing adequately and able to maintain own airway



Actions- reverses the effects of Narcotics including depressed level of Consciousness and respiratory depression



Side effects- May precipitate withdrawal in patients depending on narcotics



Dosage-.4 - 2. Milligrams intranasal

Nitroglycerin

Indications- all the following must be met patient, complains of chest pain, medication is prescribed for the patient by a physician



Contradictions- the patient has hypertension or a systolic blood pressure below 90 to 100



Patient has a head injury ,the patient patient is already taking the maximum prescribed dose



Viagra or other erectile dysfunction drug use within the last 48 to 72 hours , outdated



Actions- relaxes blood vessels, decreases workload of the heart



Side effects- hypotension , headache pulse rate changes



Dosage-.4 milligram dose repeat in 5 minutes if no relief stolid blood pressure remains above 100 and have authorized by medical Direction up to a maximum of three doses

Epinephrine auto-injector

Indication all must be met- patient exhibits allergic reaction which includes either respiratory distress and or shock,


Medication is prescribed for this patient by a physician


Medical direction or standing protocols authorizes the administration



Contradictions- as long as not outdated done when used in a life-threatening situation



Actions- dilate the bronchioles constrict blood vessels



Side effects- increases heart rate, excitability anxiety ,vomiting ,nausea headache ,dizziness, chest pain ,pallor



Dosage- adult 1 auto injector .3 milligrams


Infant and child one infant child auto-injector .15 milligrams

Prescribed inhaler

Indication the following must be met- patient exhibits symptoms of respiratory emergency


Medication is prescribed for this patient by a physician


Medical direction or standing protocols authorizes the Administration



Contradictions - the patient is unable to use device such as a priest mental status


The patient has already taken the maximum prescribed dose


Outdated not room temperature



Actions- dilates the bronchioles



Side effects- increases pulse rate, Tremors ,nervousness



Dosage- number of Inhalations based on medical directors order or standing orders
