DEFINE:
Scope of practice
identifies the range of duties and skills EMTs are allowed ande supposed to preform. the state legislation defines for each state off of NHTSA
DEFINE: standard of care
Minimum acceptable level of care normally provided in the area
DEFINE: Duty to act
as an EMT you have a legal responsibility to provide emergency medical care when called upon or presented with opportunity to do so
DEFINE: Negligence
when a patient suffers damage or injury bc an EMT fails to preform at the accepted standard of care
to prove negligence what 4 criteria must be met?
1-there was a duty to act
2-Breach of duty(level of service)
3-Damage occurs
4-proximate cause(you caused damage bc your actions/inaction)
DEFINE:Abandonment
when care is discontinued without patient's consent and without ensuring that care is being continued at the same or higher level. Once u begin care-cannot stop.
What situations can you 'abandon' a patient?
1- relinquish care to higher or equal qualifications
2- transport patient to a higher care facility
3-personal safety is threatened
4-patient no longer needs or wants care
If an ambulance is out of jurisdiction- must they stop at an accident?
NO
Duty to act is not in action
no legal obligation
