What did 1st part of Magellan's voyage consist of?

He began with 5 ships, said to S. America and tried to find water passage to allow them to cross. Found the bottom tip of S. America and discovered straight later named Straight of Magellan to pass through. He lost 2 ships in that, then 3 ships and crew continued into a calm body of water he re-named The Pacific Ocean.

Where did Magellan die along the voyage?

In the Philippines Magellan was murdered by a native tribe.

What happened to the rest of Magellan's crew after his death?

The crew was able to escape and continue the expedition back to Spain.

When Magellan's crew arrive back to Spain?

In 1522, after 3 years at sea, 18 survivors on one ship retired to Spain!

What is the Treaty of Tordesillas?

An agreement made between Portugal and Spain basically drew a line and said that Spain had control of lands west of the line, and Portugal has control of lands east of the line.

What was triangular trade?

Trade between the Americas, Europe and Africa. New World would send over sugar cotton and tobacco to Europe, who would send over manufactured goods like weapons, clothes and rum to Africa, and then Africa would send slaves to the new world.

What was the Columbian exchange?

1. Europeans introduce Native Americans to wheat, grapes, livestock, horses, new languages, Christianity and diseases.




2. Native Americans introduced Europeans to corn, potatoes, tomatoes, beans, chocolate and diseases.




3. Asians and Africans introduced Europeans and Native Americans to bananas, coffee, tea, sugarcane, ivory, perfumes, silks, gems and diseases.

What were the long term positive consequences of Columbian Exchange?

1. Population growth with newly discovered crops like potato


2. Corn helped support growing population in Asia and Africa
