What is the best way to reduce the risk of medical emergencies?

-Get a thorough HH and vitals

-Question pt about all medical conditions, summarize info and document treatment restrictions in the medical history form.

-document each medicine pt is taking, condition taking it for, and any oral or treatment implications associated with that medication.

-Written approval must be obtained from the client’s physician(s) to treat a medically compromised client. Following approval by the client's physician approval must be obtained from the attending clinic dentist to treat a medically compromised client. Treatment of a medically compromised client will be postponed if the condition warrants or if written approval is not obtained from the client’s physician of record.
Describe the role of the student operator during an emergency in clinic (Code Blue)
Student Operator:
1.Position patient (usually reclined)
2.Calmly inform nearest student there is an emergency and to go get the supervising DDS as well as the nearest faculty. Stay with your patient...
3.Begin to take vitals
4.Have health history available for supervising DDS.
5.Be prepared to assist hygiene faculty with CPR.
6.Be responsible for having supervising DDS make entry in patient progress notes.
Describe the role of the "nearest student" during a Code Blue (clinic protocol)
Nearest Student:
1.Go get the supervising DDS, take him/her to specific room where emergency is occurring.
2.Inform nearest hygiene instructor of emergency, nature and location.
3.Bring oxygen tank and emergency kit as directed.
4.Have another student supervise your patient if necessary.
5.Be available to record vitals for situation and keep all unnecessary persons away from the scene.
Describe the role of the supervising dentist during a Code Blue
Supervising Dentist:

1.Go immediately to scene of emergency and take charge of the situation.
2.Review health history and be advised of current vitals.
3.Request oxygen and emergency kit if needed.
4.Make decision regarding 911 call for EMS response.
5.Send nearest faculty at scene to call 911 Student may only call 911 if directed by DDS or nearest Faculty.
6.Supervise CPR if necessary. DH faculty and student will administer CPR as needed.
7.Make all decisions regarding patient care until patient is deemed stable or until EMS responds.
8.Record notes of intervention in patient progress notes. Complete Emergency Medical Treatment Record for patient chart.
Describe the role of the DH faculty during a Code Blue in clinic
DH Faculty
1.Go to scene of emergency
2.Assist supervising DDS.
3.Upon DDS recommendation, call 911 and assist with call information. If necessary direct student to call 911.
4.Identify drugs needed in emergency kit.
5.Locate CPR mask and prepare to administer CPR.
6.Review student records in progress notes and Emergency Treatment Record
7.Verify that supervising DDS has recorded notes in patient record and signed record.
When can a student decide to administer drugs to a pt?
NEVER!!!

Only a DDS can give orders to administer a drug or CCD faculty if no DDS is present.
Describe the role of the dental auxiliary in emergency preparedness in private practice/office setting
-Familiarize self with office policy
-Identify emergency equipment
-Familiarize self with contents of emergency kit
-Practice routines (a well prepared staff handles an emergency more efficiently when the team has a prepared routine).
