Conceptus
The pregnant woman's developing offspring
Gestation Period
The time during which development occurs. It extends from the last menstrual period through birth, approximately 280 days.
Preembryo
Refers to the conceptus for 2 weeks after fertilization. This period of time is called the embryonic period.
Fetus
Refers to the conceptus from 9th week through birth. This period of time is called the fetal period.
Infant
Name for offspring once fetus is delivered via the birth process
Blastomere
A cell formed by cleavage of a fertilized ovum
Morula
A solid ball of cells resulting from division of a fertilized ovum, and from which a blastula is formed
Blastula
An animal embryo at the early stage of development. Also called blastosphere.
Blastosphere
A liquid-filled sphere whose wall is composed of a single layer of cells. Also called blastula.
Blastocyst
A mammalian blastula in which some differentiation of cells has occurred.
Blastocoel
The fluid-filled cavity of a blastula
Trophoblast
A layer of tissue on the outside of a mammalian blastula, supplying the embryo with nourishment and later forming the major part of the placenta.
Cavitation
Process which blastocoels result from
Compaction
Process which trophoblasts result from
Embryoblast
Inner group of cells that are bunched together on one side of the blastocyst. It will eventually give rise to the definitive structures.
Cytotrophoblast
Inner layer when the trophoblast divides
Syncytiotropblast
Outer layer when the trophoblast divides (next to the endometrium)
Endoderm
Linings and glands of digestive tract, respiratory system and reproductive tract
Mesoderm
Muscle, bone, cartilage, blood
Ectoderm
Skin, hair, nails, and much of the nervous system
