Exposure
The amount of light & the duration of time that light is allowed to expose the digital-imaging sensor.
Stops
An increment of exposure that either doubles or halves the amount of light in an exposure.
F-stops
A numerical representation of the diameter of a lens’s aperture.
Aperture
The hole or opening inside a lens that determines the amount of light passing through the lens.
Depth of field
Refers to how much of the scene is in focus, both in front of and behind the subject or the point of focus.
Shutter
A mechanism, inside either the lens or the camera body, that opens and closes allowing light to it the digital
imaging sensor.
Shutter speeds
Refers to the amount of time the mechanical door ina camera opens and closes to allow light to hit the digital imaging sensor.
ISO: (International Standards Organization)
The number that represents an imaging sensor’s sensitivity to light.
1/60
Use a tripod if your shutter speed is lower than this.
Shallow DOF
f/4.5, selective focus
Wide Depth of Field
f/22, everything is in focus
Use to blur a moving object.
Slow shutter speed
TV
Time value mode - you set the shutter speed, camera sets the aperture.
AV
Aperture Value mode - you set the aperture, camera sets the shutter speed.
M
You set the aperture and shutter speed on the camera.
White Balance
Setting that enables the camera to capture pictures with more accurate color. Common options include fluorescent light, tungsten light (for typical indoor lighting), cloudy conditions, bright sunlight, and camera flash.
Digital Noise
Random pixels scattered all over the photo which may occur when you take low light photos (such as night photos or indoor dark scenes) or you use very slow shutter speeds or a very high ISO
Metering Modes
Determines which part of the frame the camera analyzes to calculate the proper exposure. You can choose Evaluative, Partial, Spot or Center-weighted metering with Canon cameras.
CF card
Removable data storage device to which your photographs are stored.
Digital image sensor
A solid-state device in a digital camera which, like film, captures the light coming in through the lens to form an image.
