What are the elements of design? |
Space, Line, Shape, Form, Texture, and Color |
What are the principles of design? |
Balance, Rhythm, Proportion/Scale, Emphasis, and Unity |
What is the principle repetition? |
It is a design that is copied or repeated or a pattern throughout the design |
What do curved lines suggest? |
Curved lines suggest comfort, safety, familiarity, and relaxation |
How does texture affect color? |
Smooth surfaces reflect more light so the colors appear lighter and brighter while rough surfaces absorb more light making the colors look darker and less intense |
What is the difference between horizontal, vertical, and radial balance? |
Horizontal balance is when the left and right parts are equal. Vertical balance is when the top and bottom parts are equal. Radial balance is when the elements radiate out from the design. |
What do diagonal lines suggest? |
Diagonal lines suggest action, movement, and excitement. |
What is space? |
Space is the area provided for a particular purpose. |
What are the four types of rhythm? |
Gradation, Repetition, Radiation, and Continuous Line |
What is asymmetrical balance? Example? |
When parts of the design are not identical but are equal in visual weight. Ex. a table with a round picture frame on one side and a rectangular picture frame on the other with identical lampshades on the ends of the table. |
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical lines? |
Horizontal lines move form left to right and vertical lines move from down to up. |
What is the golden mean? |
When everything in the room is in a 3 to 5 ratio of each other. |
What is the difference between shape and form? |
Shape is a 2D object and form is a 3D object |
What are the five types of balance? |
Symmetrical, Asymmetrical, Vertical, Horizontal, and Radial |
What does unity or harmony mean? |
When all the elements and principles of design are working together. |
What are the two things that texture involves? |
How the surface feels to the touch and how it appears to feel. |
What are the four types of line? |
Horizontal, Vertical, Diagonal, and Curved. |
What is proportion? |
How the design is related to other parts of design. |
Which of the five types of balance suggests excitement or interest? |
Radial Balance |
What is symmetrical balance? Example? |
When both parts are identical. Ex. plants, insects, or humans |
What is emphasis? What is another name for it? |
One object that stands out and is a focal point |
What happens when you see a continuous line? |
The design creates a continuous line for your eye to follow |
What is another name for symmetrical balance? |
Identical |
What is another name for asymmetrical balance? |
Non-identical |
What is the difference between gradation and radiation? |
Gradation is when a design increases or decreases in size and when one element of design changes. Radiation is when lines or designs radiate from a central point. |
