What is Electricity?
The movement of electrons
What are two types of electricity?
Static
Current
List 2 different ways to create static electricity
Rubbing your feet on the carpet
Rubbing a balloon on your head
What is current electricity?
It is when electrons are in motion
What is all matter made up of?
Tiny particles called atoms
Where are protons of neutrons found?
In the nucleus or center of the atom
What is the difference between neutrons, protons and electrons
Electrons have a negative charge; Protons have a positive charge, neutron have not charge at all
What is an insulator?
An insulator does not allow electricity to flow; example Rubber
What is a conductor?
A conductor allows electricity to flow freely; example copper
What did Benjamin Franklin do?
He is known for inventing the Lightning Rod, and proved that Lightning is actually electricity.
What did Samuel Morse do?
He invented the Telegraph which could send messages through electricity by using a code called The Morse Code.
What did Thomas Edison do?
He was one of the greatest inventors in the history of our country. He is known for inventing the lightbulb, phonograph and worked on improving inventions of others.
What is a battery?
Electricity flows from one end of a power source, battery, around the circuit, and then back to the other end of the power source (battery).
What is a Circuit?
A path along which energy flows. Remember "circle"
What is an Open Circuit?
A path with an opening.
What is a Closed Circuit?
A path with no openings.
What is a conductor?
Materials (metal)that allows electricity to flow.
What is an insulator?
Materials that do not allow electricity to flow.
What is a parallel circuit?
A circuit with more than one path for electricity to follow. If one bulb burns out, the other bulb will still be able to light up.
What is a series circuit?
A circuit with only one path for electricity to follow. If one bulb burns out, the other bulb goes out as well.
What is a switch?
A device used to open and close circuit
What is code?
A set of signals used to represent words.
What is a key?
A switch used to complete the circuit in a telegraph system.
What is Technology?
Using the results of scientific research for practical applications.
What is a Telegraph?
A device for sending messages by code signals produced by closing and opening an electric circuit.
Electromagnet?
A coil or wire usually wound around a core of iron or steel which produces a magnetic field when electricity flows through the wire.
