What is the formula for power?

Power = Current x Voltage

Name the three wires found in a plug socket, and state their colours.

Earth wire- green and yellow

Neutral wire- blue

Live wire- brown

What is the formula for Energy?

Energy= Watts x time

What happens when two different materials rub together?

They become electrically charged by friction.

Name the three types of resistors that can be found on a circuit (excluding a basic resistor.)

LDR (light dependant resistor), thermistor and a variable resistor

Describe the differences between a series and parallel circuit.

Series circuit- one switch will always turn off all components

If component breaks in series circuit the whole circuit will stop (break in circuit)

Series: current is the same throughout circuit and voltage is shared between components

Parallel: current splits through branches but the voltage is the same

What is the function of a diode?

Allows current to flow in one direction only.

What is the formula for Ohm's law? What is measured in Ohms?

Voltage = Current x Resistance

Ohms are a measure of resistance.

What way does current go round a circuit?

Positive to negative

What are the 5 risks of plugs/cables?

-Trip hazard

-Metal in the wall socket could conduct electricity

-Cable fray

-Water near electricity

-Damage to plastic insulating case

Name 3 good conductors and 3 good insulators.

Copper, silver gold

Plastic, rubber, glass

Name two safety features of circuits.

Fuse

Circuit breaker in switchboard

Explain what ammeters and voltmeters do. Where do they go in the circuit?

Ammeters go in the circuit and measure how many coulombs of charge are passing through every second.

Voltmeters go parallel to a component and measure the voltage across said component.

What is the equation for charge? (Coulombs)

Charge = current x time

What are LEDs?

Light emitting diodes (they light when current flows through them)

Describe static electricity.

-Static charges can be produced by the action of friction on an insulator

-Objects are charged positive by the loss of electrons and vice versa

-Only electrons move

Give a use of static electricity.

Electric pain sprayer:

-positive paint covers negatively charged (car framework) only and therefore only paints designated areas

Photocopiers

Electrostatic precipitators
