Labour 2005 election (FPTP)

Won over 50% of the seats, with only 35% of the vote

Liberal democrats 2010 (FPTP)

23% of the vote but only 9% of the seats

Advantages of FPTP

-keeps out extreme and small parties

-retains a strong link between an MP and their constituency

-tends to produce single-party, decisive government with a clear House of Commons majority

Disadvantages of FPTP

-Unfair system that awards seats disproportionately between the parties

-'wasted' votes

-discriminates against small parties

-no democratic legitimacy: MPs elected on less that 50% of the vote

-nowhere else on Europe uses FPTP
