General Election of July 1932

Election campaign was overshadowed by political violence as Nazi's S.A clashed with Communist paramilitary forces

'Communist Threat'


  • Nazis skillfully used their propaganda to give electorate the impression that Communists were a threat to Germany and any street fighting by Nazis was merely self and national defence

Results of July election

  • Nazis won with 37.3% of national vote (230 seats)
  • Became single biggest party in Reichstag
  • No governing majority and other parties refused to cooperate with Hitler

Hindenburg

Hindenburg, who disliked Hitler and his intentions, used Article 48 to reinstall von Papen as Chancellor of minority government

November Election


  • Saw significant reduction in votes for Nazis (33% in comparison to 37.3%)
  • Increase for Communists (16.9% in comparison to 14.32%)

  • Despite remaining largest party in Reichstag, they had fewer seats than before and could still not form a coalition as other parties refused to cooperate
