Time of Election

Eph 1:4 Before the creation of the world. God choose men before he made them to demonstrate that human effort is excluded. He is Lord of salvation

Basis of Election

God's Mercy, not our effort (Rom 9:16; 2 Tim 1:9)

His love and purpose (Eph 1; Rom 8)

Double Predestination

God elects the wicked Rom 9:22-24 and 11:7

Implications and Applications of Election

1. All glory to God, we praise him for his grace (Eph 1:3; 2 Tim 1:9), mercy (Rom 9:16), sovereignty (Eph 1:5) and wisdom (Eph 1:9), in thanksgiving and humility.

2. Security and Assurance (Rom 8:28-39)

3. We are to be confident that all things are under his control (Rom 8-9, 11)

4. Share God's love and forgiveness (Eph 4:32)

5. Mysterious but foundational, do not neglect

6. Grow in perseverance and service (2 Tim 2:10)

7. God's plan has a goal that includes us

Conclusions on Foreknowledge

God's knowledge is personal and involves his love being set on them. God knew Israel alone among the nations (Amos 3:2); in the same way he knows his NT people (Rom 11:2). In 1 Pt 1:1-2 and Rom 8:29 the OT corporate concept is individualized. God entered into a relationship with his people.
