Mary Douglas - Spiritual Powers

1. Internal - Reside within the psyche of the agent (e.g. evil eye, gifts of vision, prophecy)


2. External - Symbols on which the agent must constantly work (e.g. spells, blessings, curses, charms)

Large Scale Meetings (Charisma)

Sense of confidence and excitement that such a charismatic leader may engender is especially powerful in groups where large-scale meetings are possible and where the individual leader may not be openly accessible to all.

Personal Interaction (Charisma)

It is not simply within religious contexts or even in groups that this personal impact is felt.


Personal Interaction is also key - where it can sow the seeds of much wider social reputation.

Max Weber - Charismatic Leadership

Two Types of Charismatic Leadership


1. Charisma of Personality (a natural trait which certain individuals possess)


2. Charisma of Office (individuals possess because of a particular title which they have, not because of anything else)

Goldschmidt - The Human Career

Walter Goldschmidt’s theoretical emphasis upon what he calls the ‘human career’.

The ‘paradigm’ of the ‘individual as a motivated actor’ who seeks to satisfy not simply ‘the physical appetites, but also the satisfaction of needs of another order: the social self’.

Merit + Religious Leadership


Religious Leader as someone with a lot of MERIT


Necessary if they are going to be seen as a Figure of Authority.


Potentially, they are seen as a Source of MERIT.

Or they are a Signpost to MERIT - they can direct followers to acquire more MERIT.
