Cataract
at six places along the Nile River, stone cliffs and boulders force its waters through narrow channels. The Rushing water forms waterfalls and rapids called cataracts. The first cataract marked the southern boundary of ancient Egypt.
delta
the triangle of marshy wetlands where it divides into many small channels and streams at the mouth of the Nile River that deposits rich soil. The Nile delta empties into the Mediterranean Sea.
papyrus
a long, thin reed that grew wild along the banks along the Nile River. The ancient Egyptians harvested papyrus and made baskets, boats, sandals, and a lightweight writing material. The English word paper comes from the word Papyrus.
dynasty
a series of rulers from the same family - kingship is usually passed down to the eldest son. King Menes and his family formed the first Egyptian dynast. Throughout its history, 30 different dynastys ruled ancient Egypt.
afterlife
The ancient Egyptian believed in a life that would continue after death. Their belief was so strong and important that great preporationwas made for death and burial. Egyptians would be buried with their worldly possesions for use in the afterlife. Religious ceremonies and rituals would be performed at the burial.
embaliming
The Egyptians believed that without a body, a person's spirit couldn't eat, drink, dance or enjoy the other pleasures that the afterlife would offer.If the body decayed, the spirit would die too. They developed a process caleed embalming which is treating the body with natron salt and ointments to protect it from decaying
mummy
embalming changed the body to a mummy. Through this process, the dead Egyptians skin would not decay and would remain in tact so that their spirit would recognize the body in the afterlife.
hieroglyphics
was the earliest firm of ancient Egyptian writing. It used pictures to stand for objects, ideas, and sounds. Like the Mesopotamian cuneiform, the Egyptian hieroglyphics were not easy to decipher (understand). It was a complex system made up of over 700 different signs that a person had to memorize in order to master it. Not all Egyptians knew how to read & write hieroglyphics, and young people who wanted to be scribes spent years attending special schools with harsh training.
