Describe the history and importance of the Suez Canal. (How long is it? When was it built? Who built it?
Ancient Egyptians originally built the 100-mile- long Suez Canal by hand. This canal connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, allowing ships to travel between Europe and Asia without having to sail around Africa. Ferdinand Delesseps of France rebuilt the Suez Canal in the mid-1800s and it remains one of the most important seaways in the world and a primary source of income for Egypt.
How did the relationship between Egypt and Israel change in 1979?
Israel and Egypt signed a Peace Treaty at Camp David (USA Presidential Retreat). President Anwar el Sadat of Egypt, Prime Minister Menacham Begin of Israel, and President Jimmy Carter of USA were primary players.
How did the building of the High Aswan Dam create both opportunities and problems for Egypt?
The dam controls the annual flooding of the Nile River and produces hydroelectric power, but has also stopped the deposit of fertile silt across Egyptian farmland. Ironically, behind the dam Lake Nasser is now filling-up with the silt that use to flow down river.
