Astrocytes

Forms BBB. Microfilaments for strength. Regulate growth. Maintain chemical environment. Learning and memory. Most abundant neuroglia. Provide nutrient to neurons. Take up excess neurotransmitter and maintain balance of K ions and Ca ions

Oligodendrocyte

Myelin sheath. Smaller, shorter, fewer processes, form supporting network around CNS neurons and produce myelin sheath around several adjacent axons of CNS neurons.

Microglia

Phagocytes. Derives from mesodermal cells into monocytes and macrophages. Protect CNS cells from disease by eating microbes. Migrate to areas of injured nerve tissue to clear debris of dead cells. May also kill healthy cells.

Ependymal

Circulates CSF. Single layer cuboidal to columnar in shape, has microvilli and cilia. Lines ventricle of brain and central canal of spinal cord. Produce CSF and monitor it.

Schwann cell

Neurolemmocytes.

Myelin sheath. Encircles axons. Surrounds multiple unmyelinated axons with single layer of its plasma membrane. Produce part of myelin sheath around single axon.

Satellite cells

Exchange material between neuronal cell bodies and IF. Around cell bodies of neuron in PNS ganglia.

Brachial Plexus

C5-C8, T1

Musculocutaneous n, axillary n, median n, radial n, ulnar nerve

Lumbar Plexus

L1-L4

Iliohypogastric, ilioingual, genitofemoral, lateral femoral cutaneous, femoral, obturator.

Cranial Nerves I - VI

Olfactory (cn I), Optic (cn II), Oculomotor (cn III), Trochlear (cn IV), Trigeminal (cn V), Abducens (cn VI)

Cranial Nerves VII - XII

Facial (cn VII), Vestibulocochlear (cn VIII), Glossopharyngeal (cn IX), Vagus (cn X), Accessory (cn XI), Hypoglossal (cn XII)

Biceps Reflex test

Tests C5-C6 spinal nerve

Triceps Reflex

Tests C6-C7

Plantar Reflex normal response

Plantar flexion

In infants: extension of great toes and spreading of outer toes.

Patella reflex normal response

Extension of leg, contradiction of quadricep femoris (slight extension)

Types of Tongue Papillae

1. Filiform Papillae

2. Fungiform Papillae

3. Vallate Papillae

4. Foliate

Filiform Papillae

Anterior 2/3 of tongue

Fungiform papillae

Most numerous at tip of tongue

Vallate Papillae

Posterior part of Tongue that forms the V.

Foliate papillae

Side of tong
