Line of action

Every action on screen has this--2 people talking, it would be between them, key in lock the line would he between the key and the lock. Helps determine camera position and 180 rule

180° rule

Continuity of direction in action and so images edit together seamlessly--keep camera on one side of action across cuts of 180°

3 possible ways of crossing 180°line

An insert - something related E G cutting to person in shock etc, next edit across the line

Place camera on line next edit across the line

Move camera across line in continuous take

30° rule

To avoid jump cuts, camera must move more than 30° from last position. Better continuity

Naming cameras

Subjective filmmaking

Camera approaches point of view of person you want audience to identify with across edits and parallel edits until you have complete pov shot and total identification

Objective film making

Eye of god- outside circle of action and just witnessing what is going on

5 elements an edit must have

- information (does the story advance)

- motivation (is there an excuse to edit)

- sound (what is happening with it, can it be motivation to edit)

- continuity (new edits must have this, Eg does sound flow continuously across edits, outfits, point of interest)

- composition
