Edexcel P1 Topic 2
The Electromagnetic Spectrum |
If you can answer all of the questions on these cards then you need all you need to know to ace your exam! |
What did Herschel discover and how?
He discovered infrared light, by noticing that red light was warmer than violet light- and just beyond red light where there was no visible light was even warmer.
What did Ritter discover?
He discovered ultraviolet light, because ne knew that silver chloride turned black more quickly in violet light than red light- and it turned black the fastest when exposed to the non- visible rays just beyond the violet light, ultraviolet radiation. |
Where do electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed- what is the speed?
In a vacuum at: 3 x 10 to the power of 8
What is the electromagnetic spectrum in order of increasing frequency? |
radio waves, micro waves, infra-red radiation, visible rays, ultraviolet rays, x rays, gamma rays
What is the order of the visible spectrum in decreasing wavelength?
red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet
What has a longer wavelength: radiowaves or gamma rays?
Radio waves
What is more dangerous: x rays or microwaves? What does this show?
X rays are more dangerous, showing that the potential danger increases with frequency
What is the potential danger of radiowaves?
There aren't any known dangers
What is the potential danger of microwaves?
Can cause internal heating of cells and tissues
What is the potential danger of infrared radiation?
Can cause skin burns
What is the potential danger of visible light?
There aren't any known dangers
What is the potential danger of ultraviolet light?
Can cause temporary 'snow blindness' and can cause damage to cells- leading to skin cancer
What is the potential danger of x rays?
Can cause a mutation in the DNA which can kill cells and cause cancer
What is the potential danger of gamma rays? |
Can cause a mutation in the DNA which can kill cells and cause cancer
What are the uses of radiowaves?
Broadcasting, communications, RADAR (satellite transmittions)
What are the uses of microwaves?
Cooking, communications (mobile phones)
What are the uses of infrared radiation?
Cooking, thermal imaging, optical fibres, tv remote controls
What are the uses of visible light?
Photography, scanning (iris scanning), ilumination |
What are the uses of ultraviolet light?
Security marking, fluorescent inks, detecting forged bank notes, disinfecting water
What are the uses of x rays?
Airport security scanning, medical X-rays, observing the internal structure of objects
What are the uses of gamma rays?
Detecting cancer cells, killing cancer cells, sterilising medical equipment and food |
What is ionising radiation?
Radiation that can transfer enough energy to remove electrons from atoms, leaving positively charged ions.
What is ionising radiation always given out by?
Radioactive sources
What are three types of ionising radiation and what are their characteristics? |
* Alpha particles- larger and move more slowly* Beta particles- smaller and move faster* Gamma rays- electromagnetic radiation
