What did Roosevelt's New Deal offer?
Roosevelt promised to create jobs, improve prices for farmers, support industry, stop people losing their homes and farms, control the banks and give help to the poor.
What was the 'Hundred Days'?
The first 100 days of Roosevelt's presidency when laws were passed and agencies were set up to carry out huge projects to create employment and rescue people and the economy.
What opposition was there to the New Deal?
Some said it was too expensive. Others still wanted laissez-faire. Some felt it would lead to communism and others felt it didn't go far enough.
What were the Supreme Court Acts?
The Supreme Court ruled that some Alphabet Agencies were acting unconstitutionally because they were taking federal action in what was state business.
How effective was the New Deal by 1935?
Saving and lending stabilised. Taxes were raised to help pay for the New Deal and unemployment fell. Relief was given to the poor and people were helped to keep their homes.
What were the aims of the Second New Deal?
Federal/state cooperation to provide e.g. unemployment and sickness benefits and pensions; federal funding to house the homeless and to help those in the Dust Bowl.
Did Roosevelt control the Supreme Court?
He threatened to 'pack' the court with judges in favour of the New Deal. Some old judges died or retired and were replaced naturally and the court became more supportive.
How was the Dust Bowl dealt with?
Camps were set up housing hundreds of thousands of migrant workers. Farmers were shown how to use fertilisers and crop rotation so that the land could finally be farmed again.
How effective was the New Deal by 1941?
Unemployment almost halved 1935-41. Training and adult education were provided. The Social Security Act gave relief by 1937 and the FHA built 120,000 homes for the poor.
What was Roosevelt's role in the recovery?
He was decisive and happy to use federal control and huge amounts of money to solve the problem. People trusted him. By helping the Allies he also helped the US economy.
